Beginner Musicianship and Music Theory

 

Beginner Musicianship: Tuesdays, 9/30-11/4 (6 classes)
Class Time: 9 - 9:45 am

Tuition: $150 (one-time $45 enrollment fee if you are new to MCMC) * $15 discount if you enroll in all three courses at once or if your family is involved in private lessons with code MUSICIANSHIP.

This course, led by pianist Sarah Trouslard, introduces adult learners to the fundamentals of music theory. Students will learn to read the notes of the grand staff and understand time signatures, tempos, and rhythmic notation. Take-home assignments will enhance material covered in class. This course is designed for all adult learners who wish to learn or review these concepts and for caregivers wishing to support their child’s music lessons. No prerequisites

Theory 101: Tuesdays, 2/10 - 3/24 [no class 2/24] (6 classes)
Class Time: 9 - 9:45 am

This course, led by pianist Sarah Trouslard, is designed for adult learners to develop and apply music theory skills for musical analysis and/or songwriting. We will cover intervals, scales, the circle of fifths, triads, chord inversions, and explore basic chord progressions and chord functions. Music examples will be drawn from both popular and classical music repertoire.  Musical analysis and ear training assignments will support the material covered in class.  Access to a keyboard or piano is recommended. Prerequisites: Basic music reading skills (or Beginner Musicianship for Adults) 

Theory 201: Tuesdays, 4/7-5/19 (6 classes)
Class Time: 9 - 9:45 am

Tuition: $150 (one-time $45 enrollment fee if you are new to MCMC) * $15 discount if you enroll in all three courses at once! Refer a friend and both you and a friend get $10 off!

This course, led by pianist Sarah Trouslard, builds on skills acquired in Theory 101 for musical analysis and/or songwriting. Topics will include seventh chords and chord extensions, secondary dominants, chord progressions, borrowed chords, cadences, and modes. Music examples will be drawn from popular music, jazz, and classical music repertoire. Assignments will provide opportunities for ear training and for applying theoretical concepts at home. Access to a keyboard or piano is recommended. Prerequisites: Basic music reading skills; familiarity with triads and circle of fifths (or Theory 101)

Tuition will be refunded in full up until two weeks prior to the class start date, with a $50 cancellation fee. There will be no refunds for cancellations once the class starts.
