Spring Salon: May

MCMC offers many performance opportunities to students of all ages and levels throughout the year. We believe performance is not only a key aspect in a student’s musical education, but also the most impactful way to feel the satisfaction and fulfillment of having reached a milestone. Performance is also how we give to others, creating a special moment of shared listening and celebration.

Monthly Performance Salons occur on the second Wednesday of each month during the Academic Year both in person and virtually. Performance Salons give students from a variety of studios a chance to perform pieces they have been studying for family and friends in an intimate and supportive setting. Even if you or your child isn’t performing, we encourage you to come and listen for inspiration and to connect with our musical community

We are excited to collaborate with the Messiah Sing this year! Come enjoy a wonderful afternoon of joyous music-making at Middlebury's annual Messiah Sing, at the Congregational Church of Middlebury. A holiday tradition since 1984. Singers, string players and all who love music are warmly welcomed to sing or play along, or simply come to watch and listen, as together we raise our voices -- and also hear vocal and instrumental soloists from the local community and across the state -- with selections from Handel's "Messiah."  Jeff Rehbach conducts.  Music scores provided.

Heliand performs "When the Snows Fall" at MCMC

  • Middlebury Community Music Center (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Traverse the Americas, and beyond, in this imaginative hour of chamber music with Heliand. An musical travelogue by William Grant Still is contrasted with dances, including a sultry milonga by Astor Piazzolla and lively music from the southeastern US by Florence Price. The salon music of Clémence de Grandval, a renowned and highly regarded composer in her time, lends an elegant charm to the program. The program concludes with hypnotic selections from Chick Corea's Children's Songs and the evocative music of Australian Padma Newsome.

Heliand is a Vermont based chamber music group featuring pianist Cynthia Huard (MCMC piano faculty), oboist Katie Oprea of Bakersfield, and bassoonist Rachael Elliott of Cambridge, MA (originally from Lyndon). The group performs inspiring and evocative music and songs that speak directly to the heart. Always in search of stories in their music, Heliand draws connections from the past to the present, inviting listeners into a magical space of listening in which stories and sounds are transformed into musical poetry. Tickets are by donation at the door.

Trad Talk: Music & Conversations at Home & Abroad Presents Lena Jonsson

The Middlebury Community Music Center is delighted to welcome Swedish fiddling legend Lena Jonsson to Trad Talk, our online series of music and conversations at home and abroad. In the new generation of contemporary folk music, Lena Jonsson is one of Scandinavia’s most influential fiddlers. Lena’s style is unique in combining her deep knowledge of traditional Swedish folk music and the youthful sounds of rock, pop, jazz, American old-time and bluegrass. Her inspired style earned her a Swedish Grammy nomination for her premier album “Places” (2019), and her follow-up album, ”Stories from the Outside” (2021), won both a Swedish Grammy and the Manifest prize. Lena has performed for Barack Obama as well as Greta Thunberg, and in 2023 her trio won “Artist of the Year” at the Folk and World Music Awards. Lena is touring in the United States this fall with Brittany Haas, another phenom fiddler and recent Trad Talk guest, and the Lena Jonsson Trio is also currently touring around the world in support of their new album “Elements.” Effortlessly integrating virtuosity and rockstar charisma, Lena’s music is joyous, sparking life and connection in every performance. Lena Jonsson is an artist you won’t want to miss and can’t forget.

Trad Talk: Music & Conversations at Home & Abroad Presents Brittany Haas

Join MCMC for a performance and interactive discussion with Brittany Haas, one of the most influential fiddlers of her generation.

Join us on Monday, April 17 at 7 pm for an online performance by and Q&A session with Brittany Haas. Haas is widely regarded as one of the most influential fiddlers of her generation. A prodigious fiddler, she began touring with Darol Anger’s Republic of Strings at the age of fourteen. At seventeen, Haas released her debut, self-titled solo album. She was a member of the seminal “chamber-grass” band Crooked Still, with whom she has made four recordings and toured the world. She has performed on Late Night With David Letterman and Saturday Night Live as part of Steve Martin’s bluegrass band, and features on Martin’s Grammy-winning album “The Crow: New Songs for the 5-String Banjo.” Over the years, Haas has performed and collaborated with Bela Fleck, Abigail Washburn, Tony Trischka, Lena Jonsson, Yonder Mountain String Band, Chris Thile, The Waybacks, Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas (her cellist sister), and more.

Her quartet Hawktail (featuring bassist Paul Kowert of Punch Brothers, guitarist Jordan Tice, and mandolinist Dominick Leslie) is currently touring the U.S. in support of their latest album “A Place of Growth”, including a performance at Higher Ground in South Burlington on Saturday March 18. “A Place of Growth” is the group’s third and most conceptual album, following up their well-received earlier efforts “Formations” and “Unless.”
