Ron White has been a musician and a teacher his entire life. Ron’s earliest musical experiences were in the public school band programs in Jerseyville, Illinois where he studied the saxophone. In ninth grade, he saw a double bass in the band hall and
immediately gave up the saxophone to become a bassist.

Ron earned a BM in Music at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas where he studied bass with Clifford Sphor, Principal Emeritus of the Dallas Symphony. He was Principal Bassist of the SMU Chamber Orchestra and Associate Principal Bassist of the Dallas Civic Symphony.

After College Ron embarked on a teacher career. He went to work in the Richardson Independent School District (ISD) near Dallas where he was mentored by Joe Frank and Howard Dunn, founder of the Dallas Wind Symphony. Ron would spend 26 of the next 31 years as an orchestra Director in the Dallas ISD, College Station ISD and the Klein ISD in north Houston.

Ron’s orchestras consistently received the highest award at Texas UIL Competitions as well as national and international competitions. His orchestras have performed in Carnegie Hall and Avery Fisher Hall in New York as well as Vienna, Bratislava and Budapest. In 1996 the A&M Consolidated Orchestra was invited by the Chinese National Television to perform in Beijing and Shanghai.

In his teaching, Ron explored non-traditional string teaching especially jazz for string instruments. His students performed in ensembles that played rock and jazz. He also produced a yearly studio orchestra concert combining big band and strings. Guest
clinicians included Darrel Anger, co-founder of the Turtle Island String Quartet, Randy Sabien and Thomas Hulten. He also founded the Houston North Bass Camp, a week long camp for young bassist. The faculty included Robert Black from the Hartt School.

Ron has been active as a bassist his entire life. His first professional work was at the age of 15. He has played in a variety of theater settings in Dallas and College Station, Texas as well as several productions in Vermont. He has toured with a number of groups including the Russ Morgan Orchestra. For the past 20 years, Ron has worked with pianist Greg Tivis. Two of their recordings were featured on jazzradio.com. Ron is currently
the bassist for the Vermont Jazz Ensemble, Vermont’s venerable big band. He has also performed at the Discover Jazz Festival, the Hartland Jazz Festival and Farmers Night at the Vermont State House. Ron has worked or studied with many of music top
professionals including David Baker, Barry Green and Richard Davis.
